Don’t Stop That DVD from the Menu

Since I don’t have cable or an antenna, I watch all my TV on DVD. I save money this way, and I have complete control over what and when I watch.

Television shows on DVD are what I watch the most. I’ve gotten to know some of my favorite shows watching this way. I’ve picked up a few tricks along the way to reduce wasted time.

1. If you’re watching a show with several episodes on it and want to continue to watch it later in the day or the next day, start the next episode and press “stop.” When you watch again you’re ready to go without having to start the DVD with all those FBI warnings et al.
2. This is for those who want to try going without cable or antenna: Always have a few DVDs on hand ready to watch—don’t get caught without one.
3. Have a strong Internet connection. If you decide to give up TV and DVDs altogether, know what networks your favorite shows are on and watch them on their respective web sites. Or you could always search for a show on hulu.com

Maybe you’re one of those people who don’t watch any form of television at all. That’s great. Keep it up. Read read read.

However, there are those of us that are completely unemotional who cannot laugh or cry without some outside stimulus. Us folk need our “stories” to cajole us into laughter, crying, and extreme outrage. Being a Dutchman, I’m completely implacable—worse than Michael Corleone, and the opposite of Sonny Corleone. Just give me one episode of The Simpsons every day to ensure that my laughter muscles still work and I get the emotional goad I need.

What are your favorite shows? Do you have a TV? I’m partial to The Simpsons, Arrested Development, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Anything new this season that I should keep my eye on?
