Cyber Security

Staying safe online was one of the main issues that Frontline: Growing Up Onlinedealt with. Cyber safety is also strongly emphasized in Grown Up Digital: How the Net Generation is Changing Your World by Don Tapscott, which we’ll be featuring on this blog in a series of reviews soon.
The message of Frontline and Tapscott is clear: our youth are not practicing safety online. They expose too much of their personal lives on the web, which can have damaging effects for college admissions and future job prospects.
However, there are easy measures that you can implement to ensure safety online for you and your family, and your students.
There is a great organization which makes cyber security their mission: http://www.staysafeonline.org/. This non-profit organization, which partners with the Department of Homeland Security, offers practical tips on how to stay safe on social media sites and why it’s important to update to the latest version of your web browser just to name two.
This is a great resource to share with your students. I think teachers need to take more steps to make cyber security an explicit topic in school. Teenagers tend to hide cyber-bullying (see Frontline: Growing Up Online) from adults. Why not create a comfortable environment in your home or classroom where they can openly share their concerns about cyber safety?
Share this website with your children, students, school and parents. You’ll be a real hero when you do. Why not teach a lesson on cyber security to your class, department, or school? Stay Safe Online offers plenty of lesson plans on their site.
For more cyber security tips check out the gmail blog. They offer practical safety tips and reasons for those tips. Even the safety steps that seem obvious, like logging out of our e-mail accounts when we’re finished with them, are good reminders for all of us.
Until tomorrow, be safe online!
