Google Alerts–a Paperless Paradise

alertsGoogle Alerts are updates on a topic of your choosing (free of course).  You can create alerts on whatever you are interested in, whether long term or short term.  Google Alerts are particularly useful in following a trend over a period of time.

Google Alerts browses the web for news articles and blog posts on a topic based on keywords that you enter.  For example, if you’d like to know what the latest trends are in instructional technology, you will receive daily updates (or less frequent if you’d like) in your e-mail inbox.  I find Google Alerts a good way to stay current and even ahead in the latest research.

Alerts can also be used for hobbies, recent media events, jobs, world news, sports teams &c.

Teachers could use Alerts for their classes.  If there is a particular aspect of your subject that you focus on in your class, why not sign up for an Alert for yourself or your class?  For example if the topic of immigration frequently comes up in your class an Alert on that topic would enhance students’ engagement.  They would immediately be able to connect the history of immigration to current events.

Alerts can also be used for other themes in your class.  If one of the themes of your class is going paperless or going green, then you can have a paperless Alert sent to you and your class on a weekly or daily basis.  Students could then present the week’s Alerts in groups.

Google Alerts is also a great way to save paper.  Sometimes there are about 14 articles and posts in one Alert.  It’s a paperless tool and an organizational tool.
