My Class Was Boring, Very Boring
Today I came to the realization that my class was boring. Why? Because neither students nor I used technology. I did however have them copy notes from a flashy PowerPoint I created, but that’s not technology integration. The difference in the way students behaved and the enthusiasm they showed for learning today vs. days when technology was infused into the lesson was tremendous.
Rewind to last week. I wish I had a video camera to tape my classes as students worked with laptops on an assignment using Inspiration 8. The amount of learning, thinking, problem solving, and creativity was well, inspiring. The class came to life before my eyes. All of the students were engaged as they created their projects displaying the differences between mass and weight. It was an example of student-centered teaching at its best. I was proud of them. I was proud of myself.
Back to today. Walking around the room assisting students I noticed something different. Something was wrong with my students. My lecturing followed by the students doing some independent work from their textbooks changed the atmosphere in the classroom. The looks on their faces said it all–they were bored. I was bored.
To be continued tomorrow…
