Free Spelling Resources Online

Spelling City
Spelling is not a strength of mine. You don’t see the amount of time’s I have to check and recheck a post before it’s put on this blog, but it’s a lot. There are two of us that write for TIC, and of the two I can admit my spelling is probobly worse. Like I say to my students, “Don’t worry about spelling. What’s important is that you understand concepts, ideas, technology, and that you are problem solving.” Nothing wrong with that, right?

During my early years as a student I would have benefited from all the online spelling resources that are available today. Here are two of them:

SpinandSpell: Spin & Spell is a great way for students to spell out words after hearing the word and seeing a picture of it. Word categories include animals, what to wear, what we eat, how we get there, the animal kingdom, and in and around the home. This is free.

SpellingCity: A free spelling tool that makes spelling interesting. The site offers many resources, among them: SpeedySpeller, HangMouse, Unscramble, Games, and Resources. Here is more information for teachers of how to use the site and incorporate it into classrooms. Also, there are helpful videos explaining how to use the site.

Anyone find the spelling error in this post? (I think there’s only 1)

I think I found your spelling error: “time’s”. There shouldn’t be an apostrophe. Right?

Personally, I’m not a great speller. Despite my title.

Thanks for the coverage of SpellingCity, I’m glad you like it. We also have some games that help students develop their understanding of words’ meanings: WhichWord and MatchIt!. And, we’re very proud of our game for helping students practice alphabetical order: Alphabetize.

Yea, I caught the apostrophe thing with times too. Thing is, if you mean more than one time, then you want to say times. It’s a concept thing. Here’s to resources!!!
