TIC Recommends Page

The TIC Recommends page that you may have previously seen on this blog is no longer active. It has been moved here, to our main site.

What is the TIC Recommends page? Each time we review a technology tool, resource, or website we add it to the TIC Recommends page. Consider it a database of technology integration resources for teachers.

Also, at the bottom of the page there is a submission form should you have a technology tool you would like us to review or post about so our community of teachers can use it too.

Create A Flag Online

flagFlags have meaning that symbolizes a people as well as an individual. At wearemulticolored.com students can create their own flag and use colors and symbols from national flags around the world.

Take a look at the site. It’s a great activity to incorporate into any classroom, especially a social science one. Before students create their own flags be sure to have them learn about flag symbolism and how it is significant.

Science Fair Ideas Website

science_fair_project_ideas_logoIf your school is like most you probably have some kind of science fair/expo at some point in the year.

I always found it difficult to answer students when they ask, ”What should I do for the science fair?” There is a solution. Have them visit Science Buddies, a site dedicated to science fair projects and tools. There is something for all grade levels and interests. They can find ideas on everything from the traditional topics to video games to cooking.

Knight Cite and Easy Bib–Free Bibliography Makers

knightcite Knight Cite is an easy way around formatting a bibliography. You input the information; the site formats it. Your bibliography can be formatted to APA, MLA, or the Chicago style. There are ways to format your bibliography in Word, but I find Knight Cite much easier. Knight Cite is run by the Hekman Library at Calvin College.

Easy Bib is similar to Knight Cite. You type in the information on the source and the website cranks out a citation.  The MLA format is free but APA and Chicago formats require a small subscription fee.

Helping Kids to Predict Outcomes

minds in bloom

Today’s post is a guest post from www.minds-in-bloom.com. It’s is a great site that has all kinds of inspiring information regarding creativity.

Helping Kids to Predict Outcomes
by Rachel Lynette

What are you likely to learn in this post?

What will happen if you click one of the links on the sidebar?

What will the weather be like tomorrow?

Most of us make many predictions every day, almost automatically. Making a prediction requires you to analyze what you already know and apply that information to the unknown future. Sometimes our predictions are dead on, but other times they are way off – and that matters. We act on our predictions. We make life decisions. Sometimes small ones: It looks like rain, I should bring my umbrella. Sometimes big ones: I am not likely to lose my job anytime soon, so I will go ahead and buy this house.

Clearly, making accurate prediction can affect the quality of one’s life. That is why predicting is a great skill to practice with your students. One of my favorite ways to help students predict outcomes is to ask:

What do you think will happen if…

For example:

What do you think will happen if you add vinegar to the baking soda?
What do you think will happen if you share the ball with Carlos?
What do you think will happen if you watch TV instead of studying for the test?

Encyclopedia of Educational Technology

banner

An amazing reference site for teachers is the Encyclopedia of Educational Technology published online by San Diego State University. One of my favorite aspects of this site is that it’s searchable. There is also an extensive bibliography for further research. Anyone going to write a thesis or dissertation soon? You’ll need to bookmark the EET.

The EET not only serves as a necessary refresher for educational technology and how to use it in the best way, the EET also covers educational psychology and educational technology psychology.

I really like this entry on The Redundancy Principle. I must confess that I am guilty of using onscreen text along with identical narration. I’ll avoid that in the future :)

TIC Website and Free SMART board Video Tutorials

Technology In ClassAfter much time our TIC Technology In Class website is up and running. We are proud of the product, but it is in no way complete. I hope it never is because as education and technology changes we will too.
TIC is a site for us, teachers. All of us. So spread the word.

Among the pages you will see on the site is the Technology Tutorials. It’s dedicated to free video tutorials of everything from Microsoft to SMART board. This page is an easy to access listing of what teachers need to know in order to incorporate technology into their classrooms.

A section of the Technology Tutorials page I find very useful for my teaching are the SMART board video tutorials. Everything from the basics to more advanced uses are covered. Take a look.

Feedback is welcome, please leave a comment below or on our Facebook page.

As always, peace.
